Radiology in stomatology
Dental radiology is part of radiology engaged with use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiations in purpose of diagnosis, planing of therapeutic stomatological treatments and following the develop of disease and results of stomatological healing. In paralel with classic roentgen records of teeth and jaws, applying digital technologies, ultrasound, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance, additionaly aproved possibilites of stomatological diagnosis and therapy.
Beams that we know today, known as X-rays, were discovered by German scientist Wilhem Conrad Röntgen. For his discovery from 1901. he got Nobel prize from physics and became first winner of that type of prize.
Whats the use of X-rays in stomatology?
Roentgen records are used in every area of stomatology for diagnostics, planing of treatment, implementation of treatment and for therapy and post-therapy tracking. There are numerous examples of X-ray use in stomatology, but in this text are listed most often cases.
In restorative stomatology and endodontics X-ray records are used for discovering and tracing caries and for traumas and pathological changes in pulp and periapical area.
By modern stomatological standards, it is usual to make more x-ray records during endodontic treatment of tooth: one before start of treatment so we can plan treatment as follows, and second one usualy during treatment for confimation that tooth canals are properly filled. Depending of initial pathological process, next record should be made in period of 3,6 or 12 months after treatment finish. If we during treatment notice some complications, we should do another set of records.
In child stomatology, x-rays are used for similar needs like for restorative stomatology and endodoncy, including that here they have additional purpose.
Creating panoramic roentgen record which shows complete upper and bottom jaw it is possible to confirm teeth status and see all teeth. That is quite important because of treatment planing and diagnosing eventual anomalies in growth of jaw teeth which can be corrected by orthodontic treatment. In orthodontics, except that record, many others x-rays are done like for example side record of skull.
